We find ourselves again in a political season. It seems more and more EVERY season is a political season. We know this can cause many to disengage, feeling worn out and fatigued by the seemingly constant reminder that THIS is the most important election of our generation. Leading more and more people to look for opportunities to take a break from politics; to take a cycle off, so to speak.
We often hear from voters, Republicans, Democrats, and everywhere in between, right here in Putnam County, that they’re tired of politics. And we want you to know that we get it.
If you’ll allow us, we’d like to suggest that what we’re actually tired of is feeling like our voice doesn’t matter. We’re tired of feeling like no one is listening to what’s happening right here at home. The reality is, we can not escape from politics. If you drove to work today, if you turned on the faucet and clean water came out, or if you took your kids to enjoy one of our beautiful parks, then you participated in politics. Politics simply means the way we organize ourselves, and in turn, the way our community functions. Leading some communities to have clean water and some to not, some to have safe roads, and some to not. So then, the question is not, “are you engaged in politics?” but “are you using your voice to make a difference?”
One way we make a difference in this process of politics is exercising our right to vote. It's the cornerstone of our democracy, and a right that countless individuals have fought to secure and protect.
Yet, as we approach the primary season, some within our community find themselves unsure if they will engage. Some might even consider using their vote to sway the outcome on “the other side.” While the freedom to choose is fundamental to our democracy, it’s crucial to understand the broader implications of where and how you cast your vote, especially in a primary election.
From a party perspective it's essential to acknowledge the significant Democratic primaries for the U.S. Senate and Congress that are on the ballot. These races are pivotal, not just for the future of our state but for our nation. The candidates selected in the Democratic primary will represent our values and priorities in the halls of Congress, advocating for the needs and rights of our communities. Your vote in these primaries is a direct line to shaping the future of our representation on a national level.
Moreover, the way your vote is recorded and how it influences party politics is a matter often overlooked. Voting in the Republican primary automatically categorizes you as a Republican in the eyes of vote data analysts. This designation has more than just nominal value; it affects your eligibility to participate in Democratic Party politics.
We are dedicated to being a local party for ALL OF US, regardless of partisan label. This includes being able to identify those for whom this message resonates. Your vote matters!
Further, engaging in this process and voting for the candidates you believe in will allow them to effectively reach out, engage with their base, and mobilize the support needed to address the real issues facing our communities.
We are committed to working beyond the confines of partisan politics, focusing instead on the pressing needs of our community members. Whether it’s advocating for fiscal responsibility, pushing for educational empowerment, or fostering a sense of unity and compassion within Putnam County, our mission is to serve the real needs of the people. When our candidates have to work twice as hard to identify and connect with their supporters, it diverts valuable resources and energy away from addressing these critical issues.
As we look forward to the upcoming primaries, let’s remember the weight our votes carry and the impact they have on our ability to make meaningful change. Voting in the Democratic primary not only allows you to shape the party's future direction, but ensures that your voice is heard loud and clear in the democratic process. We invite everyone, regardless of previous political affiliation, to join us in this crucial moment of decision-making. Together we know we can make a difference for all of us.
